Parenting Styles

Everyone argues with their parents when they are in their teenage years. These are the times when we want to branch off from being under the control of our parents and be our independent selves. We are tired of following the rules and tend to be a bit more rebellious. Most want to just move onto college as soon as possible have that freedom to just live our lives how we want to. When we move on in our lives is when you are being put to the test. The decisions you make when you are left alone reflect on who raised you. They shine through you even when you aren’t expecting it. The morals that have been nailed in your mind are now put to the test. Will you go crazy or be true to yourself? There are three types of parenting; authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. How have your parents decided to raise you?

The authoritative approach is the strict side of parenting. The guardians tend to think that it is their way or the highway. If you were to question them on a situation they would respond with “because I said so” or “I’m the adult.” They typically have an earlier curfew if they even allow the child to go out. If the rules are broken there is a heavy consequence, which is implemented to try and get the desired results. They are very structured parents who mold their child into being a polite and sheltered child. Basically, they want the child to know that they are the boss and want them to obey their every command. This can make the child very responsible and a good person with excellent morals to live by as they grow older. This can also hurt the child by sheltering them, which may make it difficult for the kid to adapt to different uncomfortable situations when it’s older.

The permissive technique is very laid back. It is filled with very few rules to be followed; it’s almost as if the parents let the children do whatever he or she pleases. There is no curfew, no punishments for bad behavior, or any sort of structure. To the child they might like this a lot since they can pretty much do whatever they please. But this style of parenting doesn’t give them much of a back bone for life lessons and a sense of how the real world is. In life people can’t always just roam around and do what they want. They will have to listen to someone else and take orders from someone if they are in the work environment. Children who have been brought up in the permissive way of life may not respond well to punishment or not getting everything they want. Kids need some sort of structure to help them later on in life.

I have discussed the two extremes of parenting ranging from extremely strict to the careless parent. The most popular one that many parents choose to implement is the happy medium of the authoritarian style. With this the parent makes rules but can also reason with the kids. An example would be if the parent gave a curfew of 11 and the child came home a few minutes late due to the movie they were watching not being finished, they would understand and tell them to try to not make it a habit. If this was in the authoritative approach they would have gotten a punishment for arriving late and would consider it unacceptable behavior. Using this method will give the child a good understanding for the real world , yet won’t shelter them so much that they are shocked if something uncomfortable is presented to them.

All three parenting styles have their ups and downs. Have you figured out which one your parents used on you? Are you glad they used that method? Or wished they were a little stricter or loosened up some? All parents aren’t perfect but they use what they think will be best for their child. (680)

seating charts

Seating charts are a huge part of school up until you get into college. Many teachers enforce this to prevent goofing off with your friends and to achieve that desired silence. When kids are at the elementary and middle school levels designates this is a place where kids can keep all of their things and station themselves for the day.  Some teachers will just make it easy for themselves and place the students in alphabetical order, others might place them randomly. The risk that the teachers take by the random selection is that they might put two kids together that don’t work well next to each other because they are a distraction. Once school has been in session for a while teachers can pick up on who are friends, which kids don’t get along, and which ones belong in the front row because they need to focus. At the younger level kids need to learn how to take orders and listen to the authority, so this is just another way to help them learn these traits.

Moving into the high school level, teachers may let the students have more freedom by letting them pick who they want to sit by the first day of classes. Kids will typically sit by their friends so they are more comfortable and able to enjoy the class. This may pose as a problem because people tend to talk to their friends more than people who they don’t know.  The teacher will move problem students around once there is an issue. They enforce seating charts so kids can focus and get the most out of the material. Kids may not be too happy with where they are placed but in the long run it is what’s best.

In college there are no seating charts. The professor just assumes that you are a responsible adult and can choose wisely. (313)

Love at first sight

Do you believe in love at first sight? Most girls have a little more faith in this phenomenon than men. Have you ever been swept off your feet? People usually start off by being attracted to each other, which is what first brings them to come into contact. You can’t tell if you love someone just by looking at them. Some might say, “Oh that person seems like she would be nice or looks like a sweetheart.” But you don’t know them; you might absolutely hate their bad habits.

That first push that made you contact the other person came from an interest. It may result in you finding that you get along with that person wonderfully, but it also might introduce you to your own worst enemy. For the ones who have a favorable outcome, they are the couples who claim that it was “love at first sight.”

Love at first sight is cheesy and overrated. Even though it is used in many of the fairytale stories, is it unrealistic and fictional. It is not something that happens very much today and it truly is just overlooked. It is not realistic because if it is love at first sight you’re just going off their looks, which is not what a relationship should be based off of. You need to get to know the person and see what it’s like being with them and possibly even living with them. If you don’t get to know the person you might end up with someone that you can’t stand at all. Would you want to live a life with someone like that? I think not. That is why we go on dates and get to love and grow with that person. This is why love at first sight should not be considered when you are looking for a long lasting relationship with someone that you will love and cherish. (317)

Choosing a college

College is a huge step for seniors in high school. What is the right place for you? You are always trying to find the right fit; would you rather go for the bigger state school or the smaller private school. With the bigger state schools there are the scary lecture halls with numbers ranging from 50-600. Figures like those are very intimidating. The private setting allows you to be on a more one on one basis with your teachers.

Typically the private colleges are much more expensive. At the same time they have much more scholarship money to give away not only to athletes but to those who excel in academics.  The campus is smaller and there are around 2000 students total; that is about the size of my high school right now.  It has more of a homey feel and you can get to know pretty much everyone. A con that may come about is that everyone is in everyone’s business.

Big schools have a lot going on at all times. They are very big into the Greek life and have tons of sororities and fraternities. The sports are taken a bit more seriously than private schools because it is one of the biggest money makers and many of the athletes move on to the professional level.  Each state school has huge numbers when it comes to enrollment. ASU is on the high end with about 70,000 students while Iowa has around 32,000. A con would be that you may get lost in the crowd and find it hard to keep up with your studies since there are so many distractions. Graduate schools are easier to get into if you have taken all your undergraduate classes at the school itself rather than taking it somewhere else and transferring.

There are pros and cons to every school, but the choice is yours. Go where you get that feeling of comfort and you know you belong there.  College is the time of your life, live it up! (336)

Decisions about dogs

Dogs are man’s best friend. People have their own preferences on what kind of dogs they like; big or small, shedding or no shedding, feisty or calm. My family has only had Yorkshire terriers, they are small dogs that don’t shed and bark a lot. Their breed has the stereotype of having a hard time potty training and likes to be the center of attention.  Each type of dog has its pros and cons; it just depends on what pros you would want to live with. Some are even specialty dogs, an example would be that German Shepherds are usually police dogs that sniff out drugs and other substances.

When you are looking to get a dog you are faced with another question: should we neuter it now or later. If you choose now then its sexual parts are taken off so they can’t reproduce.  If you wait there a few things that you have to deal with depending on if you have a boy or girl. If you have a girl, the dog will actually have a period like a human girl…gross. It will start bleeding twice a year for about two weeks. Unless you want little blood stains and puddles wherever it enjoys sitting, you have to go purchase a doggy diaper. Along with the diapers you have to go get the human panty liners and insert it in the diaper.

When the female dog is wearing this, it’s almost as if it becomes a toddler wearing pull ups. It will pee in the diaper. So then you have to train the puppy to voice when they want to go outside so you have to take the panties off and change the liner. It really becomes an annoyance after a while. The only reason why an owner wouldn’t neuter a dog would be so they can have puppies of their own. Some people have these dogs for their own profit in a puppy mill, where they sell their puppies.

Male dogs on the other hand are not as high maintenance. The only issue that you have to deal with would be that the dog is horny, which may result in it humping multiple things. It would even go hump other dogs and be very aggressive.

If you are not planning on having puppies I would recommend having your dog neutered. But if you are like my dad he views neutering as hurting your dog. You never want to see your pet in pain, but in the long run it will be less of a hassle. (427)

Pre homecoming worries

The stresses of homecoming are a big deal while you’re in high school. There are different emotions that go through guys rather than girls. To girls this is the biggest dance of the year. It’s a time when we can get all dolled up and show off how pretty we can be. Everyone is looking at the girl’s dresses, and the girls always compare their dresses to other girls. They seem to be too worried about how much it cost, where they got it, and how much better they look than other people.  The biggest concern is if they have the same dress as someone else.

For guys this process is easy, all they have to do is a girl they would like to go with. Most guys go out of their way to go something cute or special. You have the guys who do something in front of the whole school which can get a little embarrassing for the girls, then the others who like the more intimate setting. I personally don’t care how I am asked, as long as it is a surprise.

No one wants to go alone to the dance. There are always people who do end up going, and it is the worst feeling ever. It makes you seem like no one wants to do anything special for you and that you are left out. Going to the dance alone has its ups and downs. The pros would be that you wouldn’t have to stick with a date if you like dancing with a lot of other people. A con would be that everyone else has a date and there might not be someone for you to dance with. Another con would be that you are awkwardly waiting for someone to dance with and look like a loser.

When you arrive to the dance you have to figure out where your grade it located.  It’s also a challenge to figure out when to arrive to the dance. Should you be there early and enjoy every minute of it? Or should you get there right when the party is starting? I personally have never arrived to the dance when it stated that it started. I feel like it would be awkward waiting for other people to start dancing and having there not be a lot of people there yet. My tactic has worked out perfectly for me and I will do the same this year if I go to homecoming.

When you arrive you typically go take pictures before you get all sweaty from dancing.  There comes another decision to make. What pose should you do? If you come alone you might want to take a picture with other couples and make it a big group shot.  The moment of the picture is what you have gotten ready for all day and what you want to look best in.

Homecoming can either be one of the funest nights of high school or a depressing one. Which one will you make it this year?  Its senior year, hopefully I can find a date and enjoy it to the fullest. (522)

Annoyances of High School Sports

High school sports are what bring the school together to support classmates as they perform their athletic talent. You meet new friends through sports and some even go on to a higher level of competition.

Coaches are a big part of sports. There are good ones and bad ones. They seem to get more intense and crazy the older you get and especially at the varsity level.  Do you think that they care about the kids? In many cases they are more worried about the game and wanting to win for themselves.  They leave the kids emotions behind and take away what high school sports should be about.  Yeah we want to win but we all want to have that chance to get on the main spotlight and show what we can do.

Don’t you hate when you have that person on the team that tries to suck up to the coach for some playing time? It is the most annoying thing to all the other players and makes them have a disgusted feeling about those them. Crying to the coach is not the way to play when you are not meant to be in those positions.  You all know who you are and it is looked down upon.

If you want playing time, ask what you can do to improve your skills. Take the extra step and go out of your range to prove that you are getting better. Throw yourself where you think you will excel the most.  The wrong thing to do is go after one of your friends’ positions to make them mad.  Support your other players and find your role on the team.
